Hello and welcome to my website! Okay, it may sound corny, but I first discovered my passion for writing back in 7th grade at PS No. 4 in West New York, NJ. Our teacher Mr. Ellingsen, a big, strict , no-nonsense type of guy asked us to write an essay called "Who Am I?" I remember how that question resonated in me on my walk home from school -- a feeling in my gut I had never felt before and I went home and poured out my heart and soul on some loose-leaf paper. The next day after I read my essay aloud, I could see it had affected Mr. E and he complimented me right there in front of the class. Now that might not sound like anything special, but to me it was like winning a bicycle. I had made an emotional connection with what I was writing that connected with someone not of my world. It was the first time someone had taken my writing -- and me -- seriously and that moment changed me forever. Many years have passed since 7th grade and my time with Mr. Ellingsen, but I will always be grateful for his encouraging words and the time he took to single me out of the crowd. It was the beginning of a very interesting journey and since then, some incredible experiences as a writer -- and it's not over yet. I've got a feeling that the best is yet to come!My professional writing career began in the mid-1980s when I landed my first writing job for the Hoboken Reporter, a weekly newspaper that covered local events. From there, I went on to Gold Coast magazine, a weekly paper put out by the Jersey Journal in Jersey City. I moved to the features department at the Jersey Journal where I wrote features and a weekly column that was syndicated by the Newhouse News Service and appeared in papers throughout the country including the LA Times, The Oregonian, the Newark Star-Ledger and the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. During my 13 years at the JJ, my writing earned 12 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the New Jersey Press Association and other news organizations. While working as a reporter and columnist, I began to collaborate with composer/lyricist Larry Bortniker. We wrote a couple of film scripts and our first musical, "Dr. Sex" opened in Chicago in 2004 to rave reviews and a year later debuted Off-Broadway. The Chicago production earned 7 Joseph Jefferson awards including Best New Work.Larry and I also wrote the children's musical "Animal of the Year" a funny and delghtful musical for children that played at the Vital Theater in NYC and the Bailiwick Rep in Chicago.Our newest musical "Bombs Away!" premiered in Chicago at Mary's Attic cabaret space in 2009 and is now being considered for productions in London and at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival. My first play "Chewing Mother's Bones" directed by Joe Brancato premiered at the Penguin Rep in Stony Point, NY in 2002 and again in 2003 at the Kismet Theatre in Hoboken. I have since re-written the piece and adapted it to a screenplay, which I am shopping around to literary agents. I have written two more plays, "Sit on My Lap," a poignant comedy about the relationship between an old vaudevillian and the reporter who comes to write his story and "The Secretary Wars," a two-woman comedy that explores the generation gap between an older and younger secretary. All three plays are available for production.My first book, "The Apple that Fell from the Orange Tree" is about my mother's childhood in a Brooklyn orphanage -- and available for agent representation.I am working on a new book, a crime/detective novel set in Hollywood in 1946. I have written four plays, three full-length comedies and a one-act comedy.

In 2002, Chewing Mother's Bones was first produced at the Penguin Rep in Stonyville, NY, directed by Joe Brancato. It was produced again a year later by the Kismet Theatre in Hoboken, NJ.

The Secretary Wars is a new comedy I wrote in 2010 that explores the relationship between two secretaries, one who is a lifer and the other an up-and-comer. It's funny, it's poignant and it addresses many of the issues women are facing in our contemporary culture.

Sit on My Lap is a two-character comedy about the relationship between an older vaudevillian and a young reporter who interviews him at his room in the Actors Home in New Jersey. The two form a friendship and a bond that helps each one face their inevitable future.

Feeding the Kitty is a one-act love story between an older woman and a younger man. What starts out as an affair quickly becomes something deeper and something each one never expectred.

After my mother died in 2001, I remembered many of the stories she told me about her life in "the Home" an orphanage she was placed in by her mother in 1918 when my mother was 4 years-old. I decided I would try to write a book about my mother's life and I started by asking myself one question: What was it like the day my mother's mother took her to the orphanage. I have been writing cover stories for the arts and culture website (and newspaper) RiverviewObserver.net for close to two years and have had the opp to meet and interview some fine actors (and great people) like Danny Aiello, Joe Pantoliano and Tammy Blanchard. I interviewed the Cake Boss, aka Buddy Valastro who has become a Hoboken and national celeb.

My stories for Riverview Observer are usually about people creating art, theater and music in NJ and NYC. I ALSO write short articles on local restaurants, too, like the one on this page for Ten East Iin Bayonne.

Hello Faithful Readers!I used to write columns for The Jersey Journal and Hoboken Reporter newspapers and my column was syndicated by the Newhouse News Service in Washington, D.C. And now that I have a website, I thought I'd add a Sally Deering Blog where I can let my hair down and talk about stuff. In the past few years, I have been freelancing for several newspapers and websites and writing plays, musicals and books. I work out of my home office and choose my own hours, which means sometimes my day starts at 5 am, drinking coffee and writing stories on my laptop in my pjs. Sometimes, I find myself writing in the afternoon and will put the TV on as a little background noise. But I get distracted and find myself gazing at the TV, especially at the commercials for depression, incontinence, obesity, bankrupcy, diabetes finger- pricking devices, ostomy catheters, law firms looking for malpractice cases and life insurance companies that warn me not to burden my loved ones once the bucket is kicked. Do daytime TV executives ever look at these commercials? Do they ever sit and analyze the fact that the constant barrage of these commercials on their daytime viewers could have a negative effect? These commercials repeat and repeat so many times throughout the day that after a while, I feel the urge to scream "Stop already, you're making me sick!"Are these TV executives clueless to the lifestyles of middle-aged and older people living in the 21st Century who practice yoga, bike-ride, hike mountains, swim, run, participate in marathons and triatholons. How about airing commercials or even 1-minute TV spots that show the positive side to aging with health and lifestyle tips that invigorate and inspire, not make us want to end it all with our head in the oven. Could it be these TV execs' own fears of getting older that makes them disregard the positive side?Life can be tough enough without these misery-generating commercials. These ads -- which are so depressing with the sad music and actors who look like they just found out they owe the IRS 20 Grand -- could send Richard Simmons to the medicine cabinet in search of a razor blade.Daytime TV execs, it's time to get hip. Try uplifting your viewers instead of pounding negative messages all the time. Take it from me and the vibrant and active Baby Boomers of my gen -- life can be pretty darn exciting and not all about depression, fatty deposits on our asses or wetting our underwear!See ya next week! -- Sally
